Lower-cost lithium extraction for battery recycling

view of energy storage station

Battery recycling is too expensive.  LiPhera helps.

LiPhera is developing electrodialysis for extracting lithium from waste batteries and natural resources. Our mission is to help battery recyclers improve their profit margins and expand domestic recycling – for a clean and secure future.

Lithium extraction for battery recyclers

A compact electrodialysis unit that integrates early in the battery black mass treatment process.

By separating lithium from nickel, cobalt, and other metals, LiPhera simplifies downstream processing and improves recycling plant economics.

Performance:

  • >90% lithium extraction (single pass)
  • No reagent consumption in lithium extraction
  • Simpler downstream processing
  • Reduced process costs

Selective Electrodialysis Technology

LiPhera leverages electrodialysis, a mature and widely used separation process. Proprietary innovations in membrane technology allow a new application to battery recycling.

Innovations

  • Membrane selectivity: 10x to 100x improvement as compared to commercial membranes
  • Low-energy electrodialysis architecture: mild electric field, resistant to scaling
Swollen lithium polymer batteries.

Use Cases

  • Battery recycling
  • Primary lithium production (impurity removal)
  • Lithium extraction from industrial streams
